Inspera Originality FAQs

What is similarity detection?
Similarity detection is a technique to ensure academic integrity and maintain the value of education. It identifies and compares similarities between ideas and content compared to those already published.

In the context of universities, where reputation and the value of education are paramount, similarity detection plays a pivotal role in ensuring students cite their sources correctly and can prove they truly understand their topic.
What is AI prediction?
AI prediction is the process of evaluating a piece of content for the probability of generative AI use. In education, this is valuable to check whether students have improperly used AI for assessments and to check whether their work is their own.
What is a false positive?
A false positive occurs when the similarity detection system mistakenly identifies a student's work as similar to a source, even when the student's work is entirely original. This error can arise from factors like using low-quality sources, sharing common ideas, or not fully grasping the conventions of proper citation. It's crucial to tackle false positives in similarity checking to prevent unjust accusations of plagiarism against innocent students.
How long does it take to see the results of a submission?
Inspera Originality checks a minimum of 1,000 words in 100 seconds with 62.26% more effectiveness in finding plagiarized content compared to competitors.
Is a flagged sentence proof of plagiarism?
No. Inspera Originality doesn’t flag plagiarism but rather the potential mis-citation of sources. An allegation of plagiarism is serious and should only be made by an academic. Inspera Originality streamlines the process and saves time, allowing the educator to focus on their expertise.
Why do I need similarity and AI-Generated text prediction?
Educators and students have the same goal. Both need to be confident that work submitted is authored by the student, with appropriate citations and acknowledgements of external sources. Recent developments in generative AI have rocked confidence for both parties when submitting and reviewing student intellectual property.

With Inspera Originality, institutions can detect and differentiate between citations, similarities between existing sources in multiple languages (translation plagiarism) and AI-generated text. Which you choose to detect is your choice - any decision on plagiarism is yours to make.
Do I have to use AI prediction with Inspera Originality?
No. Inspera Originality can be used as a similarity checker without the AI prediction functionality. This can be useful if, for example, the use of generative AI is part of the assessment.
Do submitted assessments become part of the database for search?
No, institutions have full control of all data and submissions are not re-used for similarity checking.
